INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

My Experience

While I haven’t yet had the chance to teach in an IB school setting, I’ve successfully integrated numerous concepts from my IB courses into my classroom. Particularly, I’ve purposefully woven ATL skills into my lessons. Below are examples showcasing how I’ve implemented these skills in my teaching approach, along with a sample lesson and unit for reference.

Ways I’ve Incorporated ATL Skills

1. Communication Skills:

  • In-Class Discussions: I encourage active participation in discussions, allowing students to express their thoughts and opinions while also practicing listening to others.
  • Presentation Tasks: I frequently assign presentations to enhance public speaking skills, using various mediums like slides, posters, or verbal presentations.
  • Written Assignments: In ELa, I will provide writing prompts that encourage clear and concise expression of ideas.

2. Social Skills:

  • Group Projects: I assign collaborative tasks (both structured and unstructured) that require teamwork, cooperation, and division of responsibilities.
  • Role-Playing Activities: In class, I dedicate time to create scenarios where students must interact and negotiate, fostering empathy and conflict resolution skills.
  • Peer Review Sessions: I encourage constructive feedback among students, promoting respectful communication and empathy.

3. Self-Management Skills:

  • Goal Setting: At the beginning of term, I will guide students to set achievable short-term and long-term goals, encouraging them to manage their time effectively.
  • Task Prioritization: With my older classes, I provide assignments with varying deadlines to help students learn to prioritize tasks.
  • Reflection: I try to incorporate regular guided reflection sessions for students to assess their progress and adjust their strategies.

4. Research Skills:

  • Research Projects: I assign research-based tasks that require students to gather information from multiple sources and evaluate their credibility.
  • Information Literacy Workshops: I conduct sessions on evaluating sources, citing references, and using sources effectively (Grade 6 and Up).

5. Thinking Skills:

  • Problem-Solving Tasks: I present real-world problems and encourage students to brainstorm solutions using critical and design thinking processes.
  • Debates and Discussions: I frequently engage students in debates that require critical analysis and persuasive argumentation.
  • Socratic Questioning: I like to ask probing questions to stimulate critical thinking and reasoning, and encourage them to ask similar questions.
